Phases of Concrete Driveway
Construction

Introduction

This home in Lake Highlands had a peeling asphalt covered concrete driveway that was over 15 years old.  The owners wanted to improve the curb appeal of the house and reached out to ETS for a bid.  Within 15 minutes of receiving their request for proposal, our estimator set an appointment and met with them same-day to discuss investing in solutions.  Within 24 hours, ETS submitted its proposal for an English Ashler Paver stamped, gray integral color and black powder release two-toned, acrylic sealed concrete driveway. Among the bids the homeowners received, they preferred our company's detail and trade knowledge, subsequently accepting our proposal.  The following videos detail the driveway construction phases...

Demolition

We check grade, aim to slope any structures away from the house, and check for utility lines before we begin removing

Base Prep and Rebar

Base will prevent water expanding clay soil from creating voids under your concrete.  Rebar holds the concrete together if there are micro fissures that, when compressed, turn into hairline cracks as opposed to fractures

PassingInspection

Passing Inspection

Different municipalities require different specifications for sidewalks and aprons. For instance, Dallas requires 3/4" smooth dowels in the expansion joint between driveway and sidewalk while Fort Worth requires only 1/2"

The Concrete Delivery

While the concrete plant makes the concrete, a transportation company delivers our concrete.  Skilled drivers will be able to mix the concrete properly, maneuver in tight neighborhoods, and work with the foreman to place the concrete

Pouring the Concrete

After Omar mixed the slate integral color powder into the feed hopper of the concrete truck, he led the crew in spreading the concrete from the deputy channel across the concrete bed

screeding

Screeding the Concrete

Once the concrete is distributed it has to be leveled out.  This first pass is when the surface begins to get its smooth, even finish

floatingconcrete

Floating the Concrete

When the concrete is roughly even, magnesium and bull floats flatten and press the aggregate below the cement level, while pushing water to the top of the surface and help the concrete dry

edging

Edging the Concrete Borders

Using a flat concrete edger prevents potential chipping on the sides of the concrete

grooving concrete

Grooving the Surface

Since all concrete cracks over time, running a groover along a straight edge gives driveways a nice looking 1" deep control joint where concrete is lead to crack

Hand finishing concrete

Finishing the Concrete

Using a finish trowel, we are pulling the fine aggregate to the top of the concrete to make a smooth surface

Adding Powder Release

We've poured the 1 gallon bags of integral color into the intake chute at the top of the concrete truck and waited 15 minutes for it to thoughouly mix in

brooming-driveway

Brooming the Concrete

Brooming the concrete gives it a textured finish that creates friction and helps prevent slipping or sliding in wet conditions

stampingconcrete

Stamping the Concrete

We are embossing the stamps of the English Ashler Paver and spreading the powder release at the same time to give the driveway a two-toned look

RemovingForms

Removing Forms

We've removed the forms from the driveway, leaving the nearly finished product for the owners

sealing

Sealing Concrete

We apply an acrylic sealer to the top of the concrete in order to improve its luster and prevent moisture from absorbing into the concrete

Final Inspection

After everything was finished, we schedule a final inspection online with the City of Dallas who came out and Green Tagged the driveway within 48 hours
